RTB launches ‘Student Renting 101’ information campaign

The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) has launched a digital information campaign to help students, parents and landlords to rent with confidence this academic year.

The Student Renting 101 campaign will inform landlords and tenants about their rights and responsibilities under rental law.

It will provide resources to support first-time renters who may be unfamiliar with the different types of rental arrangements, their legal protections and the steps they can take to avoid problems.

Through the campaign, the RTB is calling on students and landlords to:

  • Know their tenancy type as the first step to understanding their rights. Private rental arrangements, student specific accommodation and ‘rent-a-room’ or ‘digs’ all come with different protections.
  • Visit www.rtb.ie/students to understand their rights and responsibilities under rental law.
  • Use the RTB Starting a Tenancy Checklist to set their tenancy up for success and avoid future problems.
  • Understand rent rules and ask for or give a rent setting notice. Landlords must give a rent setting notice to their tenant and the RTB at the start of a tenancy to explain how rent was set in line with national rent control rules.

The campaign will run from 20th August to the end of September with short video ads across social media and digital platforms.

The digital campaign will be complemented by a partnership with Aontas na Mac Léinn in Éirinn (AMLÉ) to distribute a new Student Renting 101 handbook to student union offices in campuses across Ireland. The RTB has also circulated a digital resource pack to all universities.

Speaking on the launch of the campaign, the RTB’s Director, Rosemary Steen said:

“Starting a tenancy can be an exciting but sometimes unfamiliar experience for students, and it is important that both tenants and landlords understand their rights and responsibilities from the outset.

“Through our Student Renting 101 campaign, we are providing clear, practical information to help students, parents and landlords navigate common aspects of renting in college. We encourage students and landlords to visit rtb.ie and make use of the information and guidance available as they begin the academic year.”
