Disputes process

Tenants and landlords have 4 options to resolve their tenancy disputes. Start with self-resolution as the first step in your dispute resolution process. By working together, you can reach a fair agreement.

Self-resolution

The simplest way to resolve a tenancy dispute is to talk to the other party. We encourage both sides to try and solve the issues on their own first. This can be faster and less stressful.

  • Discuss the issues in a respectful and open way. Try to understand each other’s view.
  • Work together to find a solution that everyone is happy with.
  • Use the information and resources available.

If you cannot resolve the issue on your own, you can submit a formal application for dispute resolution.

Mediation

Use our free mediation service to reach a legally binding agreement everyone is happy with. A mediator helps tenants and landlords resolve tenancy issues. Mediation is a fast and effective phone-based service.

Adjudication

An independent adjudicator reviews the evidence submitted by both parties. The adjudicator decides the outcome of the dispute based on the evidence and the law. The decision is binding. This service costs €30 and takes more time than mediation.

Tribunals

If either party is unhappy with the outcome of a mediation or adjudication, they can appeal to a tribunal. You can present any extra evidence about your dispute. The tribunal decides the outcome of the dispute based on the evidence and the law. The decision is binding.
