Members of the public can attend RTB tribunal hearings as an observer. This means you can listen, but you cannot speak or record the meeting. This applies to both in person and online hearings.
Journalists can also attend and report on a hearing, but they cannot record the hearing.

Guide to attending a public hearing
RTB tribunal hearings are open to members of the public who can attend in person or online. If you attend a hearing, please be aware:
- For health and safety reasons, the number of people who can attend in person is limited. The RTB can refuse entry if we reach capacity.
- If you attend online, please mute your microphone and turn off your camera.
- Everyone attending a hearing must behave in a respectful manner. This includes case parties, their representatives, witnesses and members of the public.
- You cannot use a mobile phone during the hearing. Please do not communicate with anyone involved in the case, including the Tribunal Panel, during or after the hearing.
Recording not allowed
Recording of proceedings, including photography, is not allowed to protect the privacy of those attending the hearing. Only the RTB, or a person acting on its behalf, can record tribunal proceedings using an electronic device.
If you do not follow these guidelines, the RTB can ask you to immediately stop using the electronic device, surrender any recorded material, delete any recordings that you made or leave the hearing.
Recording a hearing without the permission of the participants is a breach of GDPR legislation. The parties to the case and the RTB can seek legal remedy, including injunctions, damages and costs.
Health and safety
- If you feel unwell during the hearing, please inform the Tribunal Panel.
- In the unlikely event the hearing needs to be adjourned, please follow the directions of the Tribunal Panel or RTB staff.
