Residential Tenancies Board launches ‘Knowledge is key’ student renting information campaign

The Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) has launched a digital information campaign to help students, parents and landlords to rent with confidence this academic year. The ‘Knowledge is key’ campaign will inform landlords and tenants about their rights and responsibilities under rental law. It will address common misunderstandings about renting in college and direct students and landlords to resources on the RTB website.
Through the campaign, the RTB is calling on students and landlords to:
- Understand the type of accommodation they are renting. Private rental arrangements, student specific accommodation and ‘rent-a-room’ or ‘digs’ come with different protections.
- Visit the RTB website to understand their rights and responsibilities under rental law.
- Use the RTB’s ‘Tenancy Checklist’ to set their tenancy up for success and avoid future problems.
- Be aware that if things go wrong, they can access help through the RTB’s Dispute Resolution Service.
- Ensure the tenancy is registered and report landlords who break rental law to the RTB.
The campaign will run throughout September with short video ads across social media and digital platforms. The digital campaign will be complemented by direct outreach with universities. The RTB has circulated resource packs to all universities. It will also run an online clinic to address questions from students and parents on rental law on Tuesday, 16th September.
Speaking on the launch of the campaign, the RTB’s Director Rosemary Steen said:
“Knowledge really is key. Through this campaign, we are encouraging students, parents and landlords to understand their rights and responsibilities under rental law. Our website offers information, resources and checklists that can help to avoid common issues. For example, doing an inventory report with photos of contents and their condition can help to avoid disputes about deposit retention. We hope that students and landlords will use the resources available at rtb.ie and rent with confidence this year.”
Information and resources from the campaign can be found at www.rtb.ie/students.
